From scientific ideas to market-ready opportunities

Kalyan Sarma is an innovation, sustainability and technology-commercialisation professional whose career has focused on helping scientific ideas move beyond research environments and develop into investible, market-ready opportunities. His work brings together technology assessment, commercial strategy, open innovation, corporate venturing, intellectual property, partnership development and institutional engagement across government, industry, academia and investment ecosystems.

He currently leads the commercialisation of inventions and innovation from Dstl, the wider United Kingdom Ministry of Defence network and other UK Government sources in the field of environment and sustainability. This role requires the ability to understand complex technologies, evaluate their commercial relevance, identify suitable markets and partners, and structure pathways through which public-sector innovation can generate wider economic, environmental and industrial value.

03

Corporate venturing and open innovation

Before this, Kalyan supported the implementation of the chief technology officer's vision and corporate-venturing strategy within a FTSE 100 chemical company. He helped create open-innovation assets, ecosystems and organisational capabilities across multiple geographies, enabling the business to identify external technologies, evaluate collaborative projects and build technology portfolios aligned with future products, applications and markets. This experience strengthened his ability to connect long-range corporate priorities with practical innovation pipelines and external partnerships.

04

International research, funding and technology transfer

Kalyan also worked with UK Research and Innovation as a Global Innovation Lead. In that capacity, he provided specialist advice relating to European funding opportunities in nanotechnology and advanced materials. He represented the United Kingdom at the Programme Committee and the High-Level Advisory Group of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, contributing to discussions where scientific priorities, policy direction, funding and industrial development intersected.

Earlier in his career, Kalyan spent more than five years in South-East Asia, including work with a healthcare incubator. He was involved in developing commercial and technical strategies for emerging ventures, facilitating technology-transfer activity and supporting the translation of research into practical applications. He also participated directly in the commercialisation of technology developed through his own doctoral work, giving him first-hand exposure to the challenges faced by researchers and founders as they move from invention to validation, investment and market adoption.

05

Commercial strategy and professional foundation

Across these assignments, he has engaged with institutional investors, large corporates, public agencies, research organisations and entrepreneurial teams. His experience includes shaping commercial propositions, building development roadmaps, assessing technology readiness, creating partnership ecosystems and supporting capital-raising conversations. This combination enables him to evaluate innovation not only for its technical merit, but also for its market relevance, scalability, sustainability and long-term strategic value.

Kalyan holds a Ph.D. in Nanotechnology from the University of Cambridge. He has completed senior executive programmes in Strategy and Innovation through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and IMD, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. His academic and professional background provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation across science, materials, innovation management, commercial strategy and sustainable technology development.

06

Independent guidance for KINIKH

Within KINIKH Group, Kalyan serves in an independent advisory capacity. He supports the Group in evaluating innovation-led opportunities, strengthening technology-commercialisation pathways, developing research and institutional partnerships, exploring intellectual-property and licensing models, and integrating sustainability considerations into future ventures. His perspective is particularly valuable where KINIKH's businesses intersect with technology, agriculture, rural systems, environment, materials, infrastructure, healthcare, natural resources and emerging markets.

His advisory contribution complements the work of KINIKH's leadership and specialist advisors by bringing an international, science-led and commercially grounded perspective. The emphasis is not on technology for its own sake, but on identifying innovations that can solve genuine problems, create defensible enterprise value and contribute responsibly to long-term environmental and societal outcomes.
